World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2016

May 17, 2016

World Telecommunications Day

Celebrating the constant evolution of communication, the main goal of World Telecommunications Day (WTISD) is to highlight the importance of communication and how information travels across the world.

It also aims to increase awareness of how crucial communication is in our lives, and stimulate the development of technologies in the field while achieving sustainable development goals.

In line with the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) work to unlock the potential of ICTs for young innovators, entrepreneurs, innovative SMEs, start-ups and technology hubs as drivers of innovative and practical solutions, this year’s theme will focus on: “ICT entrepreneurship for social impact”.

As the agency of the United Nations (UN) to coordinate telecommunication operations and services throughout the world, the ITU urges member states to celebrate the day annually by organizing appropriate national programmes with a view to:

  • stimulating reflection and exchanges of ideas focusing on the annual theme
  • debating the various aspects with all partners
  • formulating a report reflecting national discussions on the issues underlying the area of focus each year
